If you want start birding by your self you go to a park ( Mary S young, Mt Tabor park etc.) you don't need binoculars but they are helpful if you are watch a bird from faraway. but all you really need is a pen or pencil, a note book and a guide for the birds of north America or from what ever continent you are  from.
